Dr. Shinn Shares Her Thoughts On Rediscovering the Joy of Learning As She Expands Her Cosmetic Surgery Practice
The greatest thing about America is that this country allows people to have
multiple opportunities to succeed in one’s profession.
The process of expanding my practice form General Surgery to Cosmetic Surgery was an eye-opener in my professional attitude.
I was at the risk of being jaded in my field, thinking nothing drastic is ever going to happen in the General Surgery realm.
Clearly there were constant improvements in performing surgeries and new technologies (such as robotic surgeries and others), but fundamentally I was doing a same operation I was taught to do almost two decades ago.
When I decided to get trained in cosmetic surgery and flying around the country to get proctored and coached in many different techniques in doing cosmetic surgeries, I was fascinated and excited once again.
The rush I had as a medical student and later as a resident whenever I was scrubbed in a new case came back to me, and I am grateful.
It is unnerving at times to realize that I am at a beginning position all over again and giving up the security of established position, but rediscovering the joy of learning a new thing and finding that I have a penchant for it rejuvenate my soul.
Dr. Rina Shinn of Adonis Aesthetics is the First Surgeon in Pueblo to Provide Transumbilical Breast Augmentation
Commonly referred to as T.U.B.A., scarless or belly button breast augmentation, Dr. Shinn increases the breast size by implanting breast implants through the navel or belly button. Besides eliminating scars on or near the breasts, this method allows both breast implants to be placed through a single incision.
The surgery is executed under intravenous sedation, also sometimes referred to as Light Sleep (Twilight) or IV sedation, combined with local anesthesia. Patients only need about 20 to 30 minutes of recover to be awake and ready to go home.
T.U.B.A. uses a sub-pectoral implant placement allowing many women who have little or no breast tissue to have adequate tissue coverage over the edges of the implants. Many women report that this placement gives them a more natural, sloping result — rather than an abrupt roundness of the upper poles of the breast. There is also less breast droopiness in the future.
From the umbilical incision, Dr. Shinn makes a track in the upper abdomen using a jet of numbing solution and creates a pocket either on top of the pectorals muscle or below the muscle depending on the patient’s situation.
Next, a tissue expander is used to slowly separate the breast and connective tissues (or the pectorals muscle as well) from the underlying muscle to create a pocket for the implants.
The implant is rolled up and inserted in the same manner as the tissue expander. After the breast implants have been positioned inside their respective pockets, they are filled with saline.

* Creates a larger breast without visible scars on the breasts or in the armpit.
* Far fewer complications and less physical stress.
* Less downtime and unnecessary post-operative care.
* There is no tension on the incision line which can cause opening of the wounds which may lead to infection and unsightly stretched scars.
* Less surgical materials (less sutures, surgical sponges, surgical tape, and gauze).
* Chances of infections are greatly lessened due to the placement of the incision and the lack of implant-breast tissue exposure.
* Bleeding is extremely uncommon.
* Patients only need about 20 to 30 minutes to be awake and ready to go home.
