Myths surrounding Breast Augmentation and Breast Cancer
What do you believe about the risk of getting Breast Cancer? Dr. Rina Shinn of Adonis Aesthetics, a breast cosmetic surgeon serving Southern Colorado since 1997 and has been asked various questions concerning Breast Cancer.
Here are a few of the most common questions.
Can you detect breast cancer if you have implants?
Studies show that mammograms are an effective way to screen for breast cancer in women with breast implants. When you make your appointment and again when you arrive at your appointment, tell the staff that you have breast implants. You may need some extra photos taken during your mammogram.
Do underwire bras increase your chances of getting breast cancer?
The American Cancer Society
has stated that there are no studies to prove this. It’s better to look at things that have been shown to increase your risk of breast cancer including family history, age and pregnancy and breastfeeding history.
Can you breastfeed if you’ve had breast implants?
It depends on the kind of surgery you had. Incisions made under the fold of the breast or through the armpit shouldn’t cause any trouble. For women who’ve had implants and the incision goes all the way around the nipple, there is a chance that you may not be able to breastfeed because the milk ducts would have been severed behind the nipple.
Does the silicone used to cover saline implants causes Cancer?
Many studies clearly show that there is no increase in breast cancer among women with implants.
According to WebMD, “Silicone is probably the most studied implantable material available today. After over 35 well-conducted studies from many countries, it seems certain that this material does not cause disease. The results of more than 7 long-term follow-up studies show that women with implants have a reduced incidence of breast cancer than is otherwise expected in the general population. No hard evidence reveals that a broken implant is harmful.”
Dr. Rina Shinn of Adonis Aesthetics, a breast cosmetic surgeon serving Southern Colorado since 1997, has partnered with Dillard’s in the Pueblo Mall to participate in their annual Wacoal Fi(gh)t for the Cure Event.
Wednesday, October 6
2 – 3 p.m.
During the October 6 event, Wacoal invites women around the country to “step into the ring” (or even better, the dressing room!) and join the fight against breast cancer. During the October 6 event at Dillard’s, Pueblo, Wacoal fit specialists help you determine your true bra size. For every woman who participates, Wacoal will donate $2 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to help fund breast cancer research and community outreach projects. (No purchase necessary).
Additionally, Adonis Aesthetics will be offering “give-back” specials throughout October, where we give back $1 per treatment. That money will be donated to a breast cancer awareness organization.
